Walkways on High Exposure Bridges
Lake Huron Bridges
Big Bridges, Big Rivers, and Big Boats
"At Sarnia is the first major bridge that I crossed on this tour around Lake Huron. The route of this tour goes across 3 other major bridges. These are at Mackinac, Sault Ste. Marie, and Little Current. These bridges are across the rivers and straits which connect the Great Lakes.
"From the bridges, you can see ships and pleasure boats. The size of some ships is just awesome. Some of the ships are ocean boats; others are lake freighters. The ships are using one of the major water ways of North America, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.
"The ships can sometimes be seen from the beaches of Lake Huron. However, much of the time, the channel is somewhat off shore. The best places to see the ships are in the rivers connecting the lakes.
"In both Sarnia and Port Huron you can go under the Bluewater Bridge to watch the ships go through the narrows at the beginning of the St. Clair River. There is a rather strong current.
"At Sault Ste. Marie you can watch the ships go through the locks. There is a park beside the American locks. It's worth a visit. You can also visit the Canadian Locks at the Sault. However, they were broken in the summer of 1991.
"Each bridge has different procedures for cyclists. At the Bluewater Bridge between Sarnia and Port Huron, bicyclists and pedestrians walk on the sidewalk on the southern side of the bridge. This meant that I had to cross about 6 lanes of traffic. It was quite busy. Many people had been across the border that day and were waiting to be checked by Canada Customs. The drivers were polite....
"At Sault Ste. Marie, cyclists ride across the bridge. The travelling lanes are rather roomy. The bridges and elevated areas are rather long. The bridges cross the American locks, the Canadian locks and the St. Mary's River. The roadway of the bridge is not very windy. There are panels on the sides of the bridge which stop the wind.
"The bridge at Little Current joins Northern Ontario with Manitoulin Island. I think they need a new bridge. At the present time, it's a one lane, swingbridge. The bridge swings open, on the hour, to let pleasure boats pass through. At other times, you need to wait for a green light. It sometimes seems to take forever!
And, don't get lost, come back to the Hoan!
