I regularly ride from the south side to downtown and the route I take though scenic, is unsafe. Whether on the Hoan Bridge or otherwise, there needs to be a designated, safe (off of busy streets), and legal (not riding on sidewalks) route for bicyclists to travel allong the lakefront.

A bike/pedestrian lane would add tremendous value to the City of Milwaukee and its already wonderful lakefront, a value that is hard to quantify, yet a VALUE that is REAL. When you think "San Francisco" you think of the Golden Gate. Why not the Hoan when you think of Milwaukee?

The Hoan bridge is an important connector route for people traveling between northern/central Milwaukee and southern Milwaukee/Bay View. Many of these people are bicyclists, and without the ability to bike the Hoan, they are forced to take longer, less direct routes. Our county must support bicyclists (and pedestrians), for sustainability.

Milwaukee's bike path is forced on to city streets, through traffic when it reaches the Milwaukee harbor. Connecting the north and south sections of the Oak Leaf Trail will increase ridership on the trail. Also, this bike/pedestrian lane will create a safer and more direct route for many looking to commute or bike to downtown, the eastside, and beyond. Great tourist destination as well
2965 svdodge •• Milwaukee 53212 •• 6/7/2011 7:08
It would be a great commuter and recreational connection to Bay View.
2964 michael eitel •• milwaukee 53207 •• 6/7/2011 7:01
ridiculous not to allow cycling commuters access to a safe way to get downtown from bay view, st. francis, and cudahy! this bike line would provide continuity for cyclists along the lakeshore and bring in thousands of tourists on cycles to enjoy stunning views of our city and the lakefront.

I was previously opposed to retrofitting the Hoan for bicycle use. However, given that there are now plans for a complete rebuild in the next few years, I am now strongly in favor of including a bicycle lane. This option is MUCH cheaper than trains.
2961 Martha •• Milwaukee 53212 •• 6/6/2011 10:08
There needs to be better link from the lakefront to the south side for pedestrians and bikers. The marsupial bridge at Holton is a great example of how to use current infrastructure. And the Hoan already provides this link for cars, why not the rest of us?

Isn't it a federal policy to include pedestrian/bicycle options to gain funding for road projects? Don't squander this money away too, Governor.

I used to live in Portland, OR. A city full of bridges. The vast majority of said bridges have pedestrian and bike paths or lanes installed. It works for them and it could work for us.

There is no good reason to keep bikes off the Hoan. It would draw tourists from all over and be a great addition to our Lakefront. Maybe consider removing a few of the parking lots from the Lakefront.
2926 Claudia Bird •• Milwaukee 53207 •• 6/4/2011 20:26
I believe the Hoan Bridge is so unique and special, it ties the south side to downtown Milwaukee reducing time, mileage, gas & carbons. It's a beautiful view of the lakefront. It should be used for bikers and walkers as well. Gift to residents and tourists well received and used.

We'll prove Sun. 6/5/11 that the Hoan can be biked. There's no more direct link between the East Side and Bay View than the Hoan. It also, through the Lake Express ferry, link us to Western Michigan. Also, any trip to points south is facilitated by the Hoan.
2922 Christine Quinn •• Milwaukee 53207 •• 6/4/2011 15:41
Biking the Hoan would provide a fantastic route from Bay View to Downtown. Since I live in Bay View & work downtown, and I'm a bicycle commuter, I whole-heartedly desire bicycle accomodation on the Hoan as a safe, efficient and aesthetically pleasing transit link.

I bike commute from Oak Creek to downtown Milwaukee regularly. The stretch of road from Lincoln and KK down 1st or Second street is not very safe. A path on the Hoan would be preferable even though it's slighty longer.
2918 John Miksa •• Milwaukee 53215 •• 6/4/2011 13:18
This should be a no brainer especially with the lake ferry right there
2917 Richard Stenzel •• Milwaukee 53222 •• 6/4/2011 13:16
Cars and trucks don't cover the cost and maintenance of roads through the gas tax. Bicycles and pedestrians don't damage the bridge.
2916 Bill Sell •• Milwaukee 53207 •• 6/4/2011 8:34
So many bridges with bicycles - in other cities. Milwaukee, get in step!!! This bridge path will be safer than most state highways, which have narrow shoulders, safer than KK Avenue and First Street. The path would be well used as the testimony here shows.

I've been frustrated for years with the inability to bike the Hoan. Biking the Hoan would safer than my current commute downtown on busy city streets. The view from is a city treasure. For people not to have access to it in a leisurely way seems a real waste.
